Resilience
My Personal Experience
During my own journey practicing gratitude, there have been days when I didn’t realize just how tense I was until I felt my shoulders literally release, and my entire body relax in response to my writing about something or someone I was grateful for.
Many of you have already experienced how incredibly rewarding this practice is.
However, practicing gratitude consistently can be challenging. I found that my toughest days when I was stressed and busy, were the days when I needed it the most, but also the days when I was most likely to skip it. I was neglecting self-care on the days when it was most important for me to nurture it.
Diagnosing the Problem
I realized that a big part of the problem was that I had optimized my self-care routine for easy days. On days when I was calm and happy, it was easy for me to sit and be grateful for blue skies, the smell of the ocean and all manner of life’s little gifts.
But it was the other days--those difficult days we all have sometimes--that I struggled with. When my mind is frantic and my to-do list seems endless, staring at a journal asking, “What are you grateful for today?” was not cutting it.
Creating a Solution
Because of these challenges, I decided to design a journal to help me improve my practice.
For me, that meant being able to instantly reconnect with my why, my purpose for cultivating a gratitude practice (this is called a purpose-driven approach). This always helps to calm my frantic mind and focus me.
Once my mind is focused, the next stepping stone was to have a unique daily prompt that was more specific than “What are you grateful for today?”
These improvements have made a big difference for me. I’ve been able to keep my commitment to practicing gratitude, which builds my inner strength and resilience.
That way, when life throws its inevitable challenges to knock me down, I’m better equipped to bounce back.
